Challenge

An organization in the energy sector faced limitations in its existing IT environment, which could not ensure rapid and reliable system recovery in the event of an incident. The infrastructure was primarily tied to a single location, increasing the risk of complete operational disruption in case of failure or disaster.

Disaster recovery processes were largely manual and complex, resulting in long recovery times and an increased risk of errors. At the same time, there was no possibility to regularly test recovery scenarios without affecting the production environment, making it more difficult to demonstrate incident preparedness and regulatory compliance.

Solution

To ensure high system availability and business continuity, a Disaster Recovery solution based on VMware vSphere Replication and VMware Site Recovery Manager technologies was implemented. The solution enabled the establishment of a geo-redundant architecture across two locations, eliminating dependence on a single data center.

By implementing short-interval data replication and automating failover processes, system recovery in the event of an incident was significantly accelerated. Disaster recovery orchestration enabled controlled and reliable startup sequencing of systems and applications, while centralized management simplified administration and improved visibility across the entire environment.

A particularly valuable aspect of the solution is the ability to test disaster recovery scenarios without impacting production, ensuring continuous system readiness and easier compliance with regulatory frameworks.

Results

Following the implementation, the organization achieved significant improvements in key operational parameters. System recovery time was reduced to less than one hour, while data loss was minimized thanks to continuous replication.

By eliminating dependence on a single location and automating recovery processes, the system became more resilient to various incidents, including technical failures, cyberattacks, and physical disasters. IT teams were relieved of part of their operational workload, enabling them to focus on strategic initiatives and further system development.
