Comping Secures Nearly EUR 2 Million in EU Funding for AI Development in the Power Sector

Comping kompjutorski inženjering d.o.o. has secured EUR 1,936,280.86 in European Union grant funding for the development of a new artificial intelligence-based solution for the power sector. The total value of the PANDORA project is EUR 2,827,715.31, and the project will be implemented until January 2029 in partnership with the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) and RADIO-MOTO d.o.o.

As part of the project, a new module compatible with Thaora, Comping’s software platform for the power sector, will be developed. The aim is to enable distribution system operators to improve the monitoring of transformer substations and identify potential equipment disturbances in a timely manner, before they develop into more serious failures or power supply interruptions.

“The approved funding is an important confirmation of the direction in which Comping is developing its own technology solutions for the energy sector. Through Thaora and the PANDORA project, we want to combine our experience in software and data solution development with the expertise of the academic community and the needs of the power sector. Our goal is to develop technology that will help operators make more timely and better-informed decisions based on data,” said Alojzije Jukić, President of the Management Board of Comping.

The PANDORA project focuses on the predictive monitoring of secondary transformer substations, i.e. the part of the power grid where electricity is transformed from medium to low voltage before being distributed to end users.

The future solution will integrate data collected from various sensors and measuring devices installed in transformer substations, including data from dPMU devices, which enable very fast and precise voltage and current measurements. Based on this data, artificial intelligence models will be developed to identify patterns that may indicate the onset of operational disturbances or equipment failures.

In this way, operators could gain an additional tool for early problem detection and intervention planning, rather than responding to failures only after they occur. Among other objectives, the project aims to reduce the need for unnecessary on-site inspections, shorten the time required to locate and resolve problems, and reduce the number of unexpected failures. According to the project targets, the number of unexpected failures could be reduced by up to 70%.

“Distribution grids are becoming increasingly complex due to changes in the way electricity is generated and consumed, from the growing number of solar power plants to the increasing use of electric vehicles. PANDORA is specifically designed to provide operators with better insight into equipment condition and enable earlier detection of anomalies. By combining measurement data, advanced analytics, and artificial intelligence, we want to make it possible to identify potential problems while there is still time to respond effectively,” said Jan Šabec, Business Development Manager at Comping.

The project is being implemented by three partners, each with a clearly defined role. Comping is the project coordinator and system architect, responsible for platform development and the commercialization of the future solution. The University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) is the scientific and methodological partner responsible for the development and validation of AI models. RADIO-MOTO d.o.o. is participating as the field and integration partner, with responsibility for measurement and communication equipment and the on-site implementation of the project.

The PANDORA project represents a continuation of Comping’s investments in the development of its own technology solutions for the energy sector and the further development of the Thaora platform. Through the development of new functionalities, the platform is increasingly focused on the application of advanced analytics and artificial intelligence in the management and monitoring of power infrastructure.
